Junior World MTB Orienteering Championships and European MTB Orienteering Championships took place 22 - 28 June in Denmark.
Junior World Mountain Bike Orienteering Championships ended on Saturday with relay. Russia swept to victory in the women's class with a winning margin of over six minutes. Their last leg rider Svetlana Poverina, sprint and middle distance champion, was the fastest of all.
Minna Kauppi, Finland demonstrated determination and confidence in a superb run to win the long distance chasing start race on Saturday. Her initial lead of 47 seconds, the margin by which she won Friday’s middle distance race, had extended to 3 minutes and 37 seconds by the end of the race.
Minna Kauppi, Finland and Peter Öberg, Sweden, recorded their second victories of the 2009 World Cup series in the third race today, a middle distance race held as part of the O-Festival in Norway. Öberg shared his victory with home runner Carl Waaler Kaas who scored the best run of his orienteering career here. As Öberg didn't start in the sprint in Finland, he has so far this year won all the World Cup races he's participated in.
Kevin Haselsberger is improving by the day. In the sprint the Austrian finished 21st, in the middle distance 4th, only 35 seconds from bronze, and now on long distance, on his 20th birthday, he won the gold medal with an impressive winning margin of over a minute. It was a birthday Kevin won't soon forget: this was the first ever medal for him - and for Austria - in Junior World MTB Orienteering Championships.
